There's No Paris In Bama: A Comparison of Jailhouse Experiences

BIRMINGHAM-Perhaps being one of the "Super Privileged" in this country provides more perks than the obvious gorgeous appearance and millions on hand. Perhaps an official decision was bought - they say that everyone does have their price.

On the other end of the cream of the crop's spectrum is the following comparison: during a lengthy stay in Birmingham's own Jefferson County Jail during 2001, I listened to the agony of a young, black woman giving birth on the cement floor of the cellblock one night. She was not helped in enough time to stop her preventable pain.

In addition to her mistreatment and horrible misfortune of having been jailed near her due date, the baby was stillborn. The following weeks of her confinement, the event clearly drove her mad.

Interview With a Ticking Time Bomb:

How One Man Ended the Cycle of Abuse

BIRMINGHAM - Timothy lives in a modest, split-level home in the town of Huffman. Known in the community as "the Ticking Time-Bomb," the 48 year old machinist has lived a life that many people in this town refer to as "just plain sad."

When approaching the front door by way of a long, cobblestone sidewalk across the front lawn, one is drawn to a large picture window, tonight featuring a heart - warming sight. A family of five is laughing while straightening the kitchen and washing dinner dishes, creating a mood Norman Rockwell would have found inspiring.

When my knocks at their door are answered, I am welcomed by Timothy and his beautiful wife, Nora. Timothy's wife of fifteen years excuses herself and their three young daughters from the front sitting room.

"To what do I owe this honor, Timothy?" I ask.

After handing me a mug of hot coffee, he explains, "Well, Nora was watching a talk-show the other day about the cycle of abuse through generations. What they kept repeating was the notion that if a kid is abused, they will become an abuser. There were stories backing up the claim. The guest speakers made it sound like once a child is mistreated, they're doomed to abuse their own one day."

Being familiar with the history of the Ticking Time-Bomb, I smile, knowing where this interview is going now, and happy to witness Tim finally speaking out against public scrutiny. I ask, "So, you wish to challenge their statements?"

"You bet I do."

Another Story About kids Playing With Guns Resulting In Injury:

And I'm Confused Over Where the Rant Should Focus

BIRMINGHAM-You'd think that everyone knows by now that kids should not have access to guns without parental supervision. Well, that's actually the old southern heritage coming out in me when I say that, due to the fact that even though a female, I was taught during childhood to respect guns, how to use a gun properly, and how to hunt and kill animals for food.

Nowadays, it's taboo to show a kid how to properly use, care for, and respect a gun, and opinions range all over the subject as to who is right - and who is in danger of being shot.

And who is to say, really, with all the bloody, gory, grand-theft-auto, shoot-an-elderly-pedestrian, class-A-felon-gun-toter games that Nintendo and
Playstation keep lining the gaming
racks with for young minds to absorb, what side of the issue will win the debate, if there is still a debate, anyhow?

Perhaps the generation that the injured eleven year old in Birmingham last night belongs to should not be allowed anywhere near any sort of loaded weapon outside of a spit-ball straw.

Drug Law Reform: Perils of the Afflicted

ALABAMA COURTROOM-A Caucasian female living in a major city in the south is arrested late one night for unknowingly selling a gram of methamphetamine to an undercover officer. This isn't her first rodeo, however, due to the fact that she had been picked up a few times before on possession charges. Every time, she had been court ordered into an alternative sentencing program which demanded frequent urine samples on a random basis, as well as her compliance with rehabilitative treatment. Her name is Jane.

For whatever reason, be it her unwillingness to comply with the court-ordered abstinence from her DOC (drug of choice), or non-compliance with the treatment programs orders, Jane failed to meet the courts' demands. Warrants were issued for her arrest and her probation was revoked.

It's a common circumstance in every city in America. Court dockets around the globe, in fact, are filled with drug-related offenses, and every elected authority sitting on the proverbial throne issues the appropriate payment for the addict's sin.
